Oswaldo Fadda and the History of Jiu-Jitsu

by Ryan Fiorenzi on January 15, 2013

FaddaYou probably never heard of Oswaldo Fadda, have you?

He was a black belt under Luis Franca, who was a black belt under Mitsuyo Maeda.

You probably didn’t know that he challenged Helio Gracie’s school and won.  Or that his school used leg locks.  Or that he beat Helio Gracie.

He was considered an outcast by the Gracies, and taught Jiu-Jitsu for free to Brazilians who couldn’t afford lessons.

BJJ Heros has a nice article about the Jiu-Jitsu master here.

Happy birthday Oswaldo Fadda!  Jan. 15th, 1921 – April 1st, 2005.
