A Cool Muay Thai Front Kick Sweep

by Eric Pearch on April 27, 2011

The Muay Thai teep aka front kick is one of the most common techniques in kickboxing. It’s usually used to keep distance, but can also be used for some serious damage as we saw with Anderson Silva’s front kick knockout a few weeks ago.

I just stumbled across this very interesting trap followed by a sweep. The trap is good and a classic. The sweep… I’m not so sure about yet.

If he kicks with his left leg:

  1. Step back as he kicks so that you are catching the tail end of the front kick.
  2. Right hand traps the top of his foot, and your left hand traps at his achilles.  Both hands should be pulling his foot in to you.
  3. Step back hard and explosively drag his foot far to your left which should hopefully spin then dump his body.

Give it a shot and let me know how it worked for you. It looks cool, but I’m not sure how practical it is as a sweep.

Just tried it. The sweep works well if you get his momentum coming to you as you pull then whip across your body.
