Taking Someone Down When You’re Pinned to the Cage

by Tom Reynolds on May 2, 2011

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series Takedowns Off The Cage

Most of you guys have been in this scenario. You’re pinned against the cage and need to take your opponent down.  Nine times out of ten he will have at least one under hook, and he may or may not have a good base. Either way, you’re losing points, taking damage, and getting tired out.

If you train in MMA you’ve probably been in that situation. Below, Rob is showing a classic wrestling takedown to get you out of a bad spot.  The beauty of this video is not in the technique itself, but the details that he shows to make it work.

Critical Takedown Details

  • At :55, Razor Rob emphasized the fact that you kill his under hook by cutting in at his elbow instead of his shoulder.
  • At 1:05, watch how his hip turns in to control the position and make the takedown possible.
