How to Spar: Shogun vs Junior dos Santos

by Tom Reynolds on June 9, 2011

Watching high level fighters spar is a lot of fun to watch.  The video showing Anderson Silva spar against Machida and Noguiera taught us a lot.

This video shows two of the top mixed martial artists sparring (Shogun vs Junior dos Santos) with a good old kickboxing match from back in 2008 at Team Noguiera in Rio.

Pay attention to the combinations used in this sparring match.  If you want to learn how to spar well, watch how these guys create and take advantage of openings.

oh, you mean that trying to knock out your sparring partner, or going at 80% isn’t correct? I love this video because these are high level fighters, and they’re really taking advantage of sparring for what it is-about creating timing, distance, and rhythm for your fight, not for attempting to “beat” your sparring partner.  sure, as you get into it your punches might get harder and your kicks will get harder but you shouldn’t’ start out at 80-90% during sparring…..it’s counter productive.
