Crucifix Sidemount for MMA

by Tom Reynolds on December 6, 2010

The best ground and pound comes when you can trap your opponent’s arm.  That became very clear in UFC 8 when Goodridge trapped Herrera in the crucifix from behind and knocked him out with elbows.

The Ultimate Sidemount for MMA

You won’t see too many people trying to hit the fireman’s carry anymore in the cage like in the above video, but you will see a lot of sidemount opportunities. Carlos Machado teaches arguably one of the best sidemounts out there. He is a wizard at trapping the arm closest to the legs with his shins and then isolating the far arm.  Matt Hughes is very well known for the position as he showed against BJ Penn.

This form of sidemount leaves your opponent defenseless in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but it can especially be devastating in MMA. Carlos Machado teaches to trap the arm with the closest leg the windshield wiper your feet so that your leg that is closest to his head is clear for strikes or to step over. This is clearly shown in the video below.

Sensei Jamel McCurry is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt under Master Carlos Machado.  Jamel currently has two top of the line locations. His primary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school is in Clinton Township Michigan.  For more information on Jamel or is school, visit his website here.
