Can Tae Kwon Do Be Used In MMA?

by Ryan Fiorenzi on December 11, 2012

Tae Kwon Do is one of the traditional martial arts that does not get much respect in the mma world.  However, if you are not used to the incredible speed and different angles that the kicks can come from, you may be very surprised with what Tae Kwon Do fighters can bring!

Sirkan Yilmaz is one of the most exciting mma fighters to ever enter the cage.  His grappling skills were not good, which kept from him winning at the highest levels of mma (like his loss to Caol Uno), but his kicks are incredible!

This is a highlight reel of  his kickboxing matches.  The quality of some of these highlights is not the best, but his striking skills are excellent.

1:02- Look at the amount of distance he covered in one combination.

1:26-  Would you ever imagine a TKD fighter beating on a Muay Thai Fighter like this?!

1:33- The power of the spinning back knocks his opponent across the ring!

2:27, 3:40, and 4:06- Notice how a good kicker is able to time their opponents kicks by stepping in with a punch.

4:07 through 4:17- Watch how he combines punches and kicks together smoothly, based on how close his opponent is (punches are close range, kick, long range.)

4:28- Watch how he times his opponent bouncing off the ropes into his next attack.
