Bas Rutten’s Guide to the Liver Shot

by Eric Pearch on May 11, 2011

Bas Rutten is a living legend made famous by his charisma and liver shot knockouts.  He has a very strong and diverse stand up background focused on Muay Thai as well as a second degree black belt in both Kyokushin Karate and Tae Kwon Do.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Bas, here is a great highlight video of him.

How to Hit Someone With the Liver Shot

There are a many different ways to hit someone with the liver shot. The most common ways that I have seen are from round house kicks, spinning back kicks, knees, and of course, the modified hook to the body that Bas used so well.

Bas teaches his liver shot as a hybrid between a hook, cross, and uppercut. He has his students imagine that they have a knife on their big knuckle and the goal is to drive that about 45 degrees up through the ribs. He says that if you pull the punch, you might as well not even try. It is critical to drive through their body with the punch.

Now give it a shot. Practice on a heavy bag or a partner and start mixing up your combination to see what works for you. Once you’re comfortable, start practicing in sparring.

Keep in mind that this is a Pancrase fight, and in Pancrase you can’t hit with a fist to the face. I would recommend watching the whole fight, but the liver shots start at 3:00

Here are some setups to hit someone with the liver shot:

  • Overhand Right to the Liver Shot
  • Slip their Right Cross to the Liver Shot
  • Left Hook to the Head to Left Hook to the Body
